Cricut Foil Transfer Kit Review


The grand reveal of Cricut's new foil system was exactly what people were looking for. When the We R Memory Keepers Foil quill system was released, it was seen as revolutionary. Foiling cards with lettering and mandalas quickly made even the most generic card look vibrant. But the system was also clunky. It took time to warm up, had three different pressure sensitive pens and the pressure applied was questionable leaving a less than desirable effect. For me, the We R Memories Foil Quill was nothing but a waste of money as the idea never quite translated to my cards correctly.

Keepers items, it misses the mark.

Cricut promised us a new foil system without the need of heat and with new pressure technology. It sounds promising. 

In practice, the release of the Foil Transfer Kit was a bit of a disaster. Obtaining the product seemed next to impossible except for the few who did get it. Cricut continues to have fulfillment issues with many people stuck in the processing stage. 

Lucky me, I obtained the Foil Transfer Kit system. The price seems right. At just $39, that's nearly identical to We R Memory Foil Quill which retails anywhere from $39.99-$49.99. The foil is a little pricey retailing from $7.99-$12.99. But again, this is in line with other foiling systems.

The system here seems right, what could go wrong?

And then I went to use it. And what did I get?

Stuck on preparing. And nothing can fix this problem. Currently, I can't use the foil in any way. Cricut's customer service since quarantine is nothing short of abysmal with wait times of over 2 hours on the phone, and nearly a week since receiving my product, there's been no e-mail response.

So... this is all I see... And this is all it will do.

Other work arounds I've tried including uninstalling Design Space and reinstalling it. Still no luck. 

So I did what I thought was another solution, try to run Design Space from my iOS devices. As it turns out, the Foil Transfer Kit system is incompatible with iOS devices. Why? It's not only unclear but completely baffling. So many people exclusively use the iOS app, which means the Foil Transfer Kit completely alienates a huge segment of the population. Hopefully, this will be remedied soon, but as it stands, the Foil Transfer Kit is only for those with PC or Macs.

Now, to be fair, some people can get their Foil Transfer Kit to work just fine. Me. Nothing. And Cricut is impossible to get in contact with leaving me with nothing but a nice paper weight and shimmery paper. This is the most disappointed I've ever been with Cricut, and I hope they remedy these problems ASAP. So by all means purchase the Foil Transfer Kit, but know that the current Design Space makes this purchase a pricey gamble.

    Hello! Great blog btw! I was also having the exact same issue BUT I did some digging and found out that it was because I was using the wrong dial! As per the cricut help page, you have to always use the "custom" dial and select the material on your computer even if your material is on the dial. Give it a try! Hope it works for you too 😊

Update: While the competition wasn't heavily entered, I'll take my wins where I can get them, my card was a top pick on Try Stampin' on Tuesday. 3D Fantastic Fans Cards

I recently acquired Anna Griffin's 3D Fantastic Fans dies . I was excited to get these dies because it takes the traditional flat fans and reenvisions them with more dimension.  The dies require a little more finagling than you would think. Because they pop out, you're going to need a powerful glue or lots of 3D adhesive dots to make this work.  Using these dies, I looked at an assortment of challenges that I could utilize for inspiration. Over on Time Out Challenges, they wanted us to use a quote to help make a card come to life. So for my first card I wanted to use each of the pieces of the fan. I've had this vintage paper with a rose for the better part of four years when I first got into card making; I then pulled out my new metallic rose paper and paired it with this vintage paper. Anna Griffin Empress Machine Review

For the past few months, I've really given my Anna Griffin Empress Machine a workout. For those not in the know, The Empress is a high powered non-crank emboss and die cutting machine. It's akin to devices such as the Cuttlebug, The Big Shot, or the Gemini. I Have a Cricut / Cameo / Silhouette - Why This? The short answer is, you can create texture in your cards. While the aforementioned devices are no doubt powerful and create designs that the Empress can only dream about, there's no doubt that emboss machines give textures and creates intricacy that cutting machines cannot compete with. My most complimented cards are not the ones with the most layers or even the most elegant, rather it's the cards with texture.
