Color Dare Challenge Entry #415: Three Wise Men Card

This week over on the Color My Heart challenge, they gave us a wide range of nine colors. Like yesterday's Christmas Colour Challenge, I was excited to go into this challenge with Christmas on my mind. Additionally, my favorite color Toffee (or sometimes referred to as craft) made an appearance.

Here were the colors that I could use:

I made use of ballerina, blue bells, toffee and linen.

Here was the card I made:

I'm not usually one for religious iconography, but something about the trifold card was too cool. This is perfect for those who love their Three Wise Men cards. A tradition I know many people hold near and dear to their heart.

The die set is the Nativity Shadow Box Dies from Anna Griffin. I actually created a backing to the card so that I could write a little message to the recipient.

Rather than follow gender norms, I flipped the traditional man in blue, woman in pink. The choice was two fold, one was an element of surprise, but the other is Mary is often depicted wearing blue, so this made sense.

I tried to make the Three Wise Men in sage green, but after too much toiling and mixed results, I ended up scrapping the sage green. In future cards I might actually use some type of acetate window to create a different dimension behind the wise men.

Anyway, these dies were super easy to cut and moved much quicker than I expected. A little stamp of Peace * Love* Joy from the Recollections Christmas stamp set, and voila, this was the end result.

And this is how it looks when the card stands:

This is definitely a card I will be making again and again this holiday season.

Anna Griffin Empress Machine Review

For the past few months, I've really given my Anna Griffin Empress Machine a workout. For those not in the know, The Empress is a high powered non-crank emboss and die cutting machine. It's akin to devices such as the Cuttlebug, The Big Shot, or the Gemini. I Have a Cricut / Cameo / Silhouette - Why This? The short answer is, you can create texture in your cards. While the aforementioned devices are no doubt powerful and create designs that the Empress can only dream about, there's no doubt that emboss machines give textures and creates intricacy that cutting machines cannot compete with. My most complimented cards are not the ones with the most layers or even the most elegant, rather it's the cards with texture. Cricut and other Cutting Machines just lack that  ability to create the"feel" of a higher quality card. Pros of the Empress I absolutely adore my Empress. For those with arthritis or other mobility issues, a device like the Empress is a ...

Black and White Z Card

Over on the Just Us Girls challenge blog , the task this week was quite monochromatic. Let's take a look at the challenge: I can't say that I've ever worked with just black and white for a card. While no doubt I probably inadvertently made a card with this scheme, I can't say I've gone out of my way to enhance only black and white (I know I've definitely grey scaled before).  It was my dear friend Melinda's birthday. For her birthday I made her and her husband Mah Jongg t-shirts using HTV. I was thrilled with the results: Melinda is the kind of person who loves handmade cards, so I went into this challenge with her in mind. I also have recently fallen in love with Z fold cards (see my vintage masculine Z-Card here ). I pulled out my Sizzix Circle Thinlits and my Recollections Black and White Paper and got to work. Here are the results: So the interesting thing with a Z-fold card is how it unfolds in so many dimensions. Here is the front and back layer. Her...
