The House Challenge #JL2920 Entry: Diversity Card(s)

This week I took a look at the website The House That Stamps Built. For their Wednesday challenge, they gave out this sketch design:

It's a pretty popular silhouette, so it was easy to get inspiration with this design. I recently received my brand new  United as One Stamp set from Hero Arts. I wanted to make sure that diversity was embodied through my card, so I used paper from Capitol Chic Designs which is a stationary and planner company that celebrates diversity (and is run by a Black entrepreneur).

So with that in mind, here was my entry for this challenge:

I used 3D adhesive dots to make the heart pop a little. I'm really happy with the results.

And I never make cards in one, so I made a second version with a different stamp from the same Hero Arts collection.

What I love about the stamp set is the versatility of the hands. It's the first time that I've seen Black representation explicitly on a stamp set. I settled on the Are you OK? phrase because I think that's the perfect question to ask someone who identifies BIPOC during these troubling times.

Remember, if you're to use a card like this, it's important that you don't expect a response, and you should probably explicitly state that in the card. I remember reading that in Holly Chang's The Person's You Mean to Be which is fantastic antiracist text.

Check back tomorrow for another Capitol Chic Design inspired card with a whole different Paris spin.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Two fabulous cards! The papers are really pretty and I really like the use of the heart on the first card. Thanks for playing with The House That Stamps Built.

I Love You to the Moon and Back Bendy Card

Update: While the competition wasn't heavily entered, I'll take my wins where I can get them, my card was a top pick on Try Stampin' on Tuesday. Over on Try Stampin' on Tuesday , they had one of the hardest challenges I've seen in a long while. The challenge involved either utilizing a particular sketch or making a bendy card. I'm one always up for a challenge, so a bendy card it is... the only problem... I had no idea where to begin. Here's the challenge they set up for us: I was convinced there would be some type of design already premade on Design Space that would allow me to make a bendy card of some kind, but there was no such luck. I took a look at Melody Lane's Patreon and Lori Whitlock's shop, and alas, no luck. This mean I had to work from scratch. Now granted, I could make the card using traditional techniques, but when I looked up tutorials, the whole process looked a little too intimidating for me. I knew this could be done on Design Spa...

3D Fantastic Fans Cards

I recently acquired Anna Griffin's 3D Fantastic Fans dies . I was excited to get these dies because it takes the traditional flat fans and reenvisions them with more dimension.  The dies require a little more finagling than you would think. Because they pop out, you're going to need a powerful glue or lots of 3D adhesive dots to make this work.  Using these dies, I looked at an assortment of challenges that I could utilize for inspiration. Over on Time Out Challenges, they wanted us to use a quote to help make a card come to life. So for my first card I wanted to use each of the pieces of the fan. I've had this vintage paper with a rose for the better part of four years when I first got into card making; I then pulled out my new metallic rose paper and paired it with this vintage paper. I then added in the "For My Friend" sentiment from Anna Griffin's Wild Flower box. For my second card, I used Color My Heart Color Dare challenge . The inspiration photo was ...

Baby Cards: Sketch Challenges

Over on Anna Griffin, she recently released her Baby Icon Cut and Emboss Folders . Baby cards are often the hardest items for me to keep in stock. They're often my biggest sellers at trade shows, and as someone in their 30s, I know so many people having little ones. So I went to work. I really didn't know where to begin my day, so I started with creating a whole slew of sentiments. I often struggle with what a baby card should say, but Best Wishes kind of covers all the bases. But that didn't really help with inspiration. I went looking for Sketch Challenges. The first challenge comes courtesy of Sketch Saturday :  And here was my result: Using an assortment of pattern papers, I was really happy with the result. I ended up using the horsey cut so that the little mustache could peek through. Over on Try Stampin' on Tuesday , they're up to their milestone 500th sketch. Here was the sketch: And here was my creation based on that: I was thrilled with this result. It fe...
