Inkspirational Challenge #228: Snow Cards

Over on the Inkspirational Blog, their was one word on their mind. Anyone here on the East Coast waiting for the first Nor'easter with up to two feet possible this Wednesday and Thursday know what that word is:

Recently, I ordered these Mini Holiday Frame Dies from Anna Griffin and got right to work with this challenge in mind. Armed with brand new stickers from the Recollections collection, I knew exactly what I wanted to create.

Here was the first card of the bunch:

The white snow flakes stayed front and center. I used my cardinal embellishments to give it just another layer. And here's the card from another angle:

The center phrase says, "Let Heaven and Nature Sing.... Let Earth Receive Her King."

Sticking with the red theme, my second card was a little more secular:

As for the next two cards, I went with a more woodland theme:

I used a gold shimmer background to give the snowflakes another level of pop, and then spruced up the card with evergreen trees.

My final card leaned both into the woodland theme and the snow theme, with the phrase "There's Snow Place Like Home."

Overall, these mini holiday frame dies are one of the best investments this holiday season. They look stunning and were fairly easy to cut and weed. Cards on average took about 45 minutes, which is not bad for such high quality cards.

Anna Griffin Empress Machine Review

For the past few months, I've really given my Anna Griffin Empress Machine a workout. For those not in the know, The Empress is a high powered non-crank emboss and die cutting machine. It's akin to devices such as the Cuttlebug, The Big Shot, or the Gemini. I Have a Cricut / Cameo / Silhouette - Why This? The short answer is, you can create texture in your cards. While the aforementioned devices are no doubt powerful and create designs that the Empress can only dream about, there's no doubt that emboss machines give textures and creates intricacy that cutting machines cannot compete with. My most complimented cards are not the ones with the most layers or even the most elegant, rather it's the cards with texture. Cricut and other Cutting Machines just lack that  ability to create the"feel" of a higher quality card. Pros of the Empress I absolutely adore my Empress. For those with arthritis or other mobility issues, a device like the Empress is a ...

Black and White Z Card

Over on the Just Us Girls challenge blog , the task this week was quite monochromatic. Let's take a look at the challenge: I can't say that I've ever worked with just black and white for a card. While no doubt I probably inadvertently made a card with this scheme, I can't say I've gone out of my way to enhance only black and white (I know I've definitely grey scaled before).  It was my dear friend Melinda's birthday. For her birthday I made her and her husband Mah Jongg t-shirts using HTV. I was thrilled with the results: Melinda is the kind of person who loves handmade cards, so I went into this challenge with her in mind. I also have recently fallen in love with Z fold cards (see my vintage masculine Z-Card here ). I pulled out my Sizzix Circle Thinlits and my Recollections Black and White Paper and got to work. Here are the results: So the interesting thing with a Z-fold card is how it unfolds in so many dimensions. Here is the front and back layer. Her...
