Bird House Cards: Color Challenge


Hey crafters! It's been a minute. My craftspiration has been low, but in truth, I've also been busy on a few projects. I'm working on a teaching blog series, dedicating more times towards playing video games and enjoying the nicer weather. So the crafting is on the back seat. 

That said, yesterday I found a bit of time with myself, so I got to use some of the new items I acquired. The Just Us Girls Challenge group posted this beautiful color combo this Saturday. The color combo was as follows:


The colors definitely showcased a spring vibe to me. Which was perfect because I just acquire my Birdhouse Easel Card Dies from Anna Griffin.

I compiled my paper and went to work. Here were the results:


The card and the embossing actually didn't take a particularly long time. What gave me a heart attack was when I went to apply the purple house to the purple cardstock. That was a complete accident! I meant to apply the purple colored house to the blue backing. I was devastated because I ruined the ability to enter the challenge. Thankfully, I was quick on my feet and decided to add a blue "just for you" sentiment and a blue stopper to fit the challenge needs. As Bob Ross would say, "Happy little accidents."

Here was the second card:

So here is the blue house on the blue cardstock. I've committed to making easel cards with Gorilla Glue, and let me tell what you a difference it makes. Most of my easel cards would fall apart when shipped before. Now? Never! 

I also made a rosette. I loathe making rosettes. They look beautiful, but what a tedious and difficult affair. I purchased the Anna Griffin Paper Tricks Cut and Embossing Folders to make the process easier. Was it easier? Yes and no. At first, the rosette was difficult to fold. I didn't find the emboss worked that well. Thankfully, I got into the rhythm of it for the second fold. A worthy purchase? The verdict is still out, but it did make this beautiful rosette, and the second half went fast enough. 

So overall, I'm really excited at the prospect of these new cards. The Bird House easel cards feel essential and this color challenge was the perfect inspiration to start this whole series of cards.

Update: While the competition wasn't heavily entered, I'll take my wins where I can get them, my card was a top pick on Try Stampin' on Tuesday. Over on Try Stampin' on Tuesday , they had one of the hardest challenges I've seen in a long while. The challenge involved either utilizing a particular sketch or making a bendy card. 3D Fantastic Fans Cards

I recently acquired Anna Griffin's 3D Fantastic Fans dies . I was excited to get these dies because it takes the traditional flat fans and reenvisions them with more dimension.  The dies require a little more finagling than you would think. Because they pop out, you're going to need a powerful glue or lots of 3D adhesive dots to make this work.  Using these dies, I looked at an assortment of challenges that I could utilize for inspiration. Over on Time Out Challenges, they wanted us to use a quote to help make a card come to life. So for my first card I wanted to use each of the pieces of the fan. I've had this vintage paper with a rose for the better part of four years when I first got into card making; I then pulled out my new metallic rose paper and paired it with this vintage paper. Anna Griffin Empress Machine Review

For the past few months, I've really given my Anna Griffin Empress Machine a workout. For those not in the know, The Empress is a high powered non-crank emboss and die cutting machine. It's akin to devices such as the Cuttlebug, The Big Shot, or the Gemini. I Have a Cricut / Cameo / Silhouette - Why This? The short answer is, you can create texture in your cards. While the aforementioned devices are no doubt powerful and create designs that the Empress can only dream about, there's no doubt that emboss machines give textures and creates intricacy that cutting machines cannot compete with. My most complimented cards are not the ones with the most layers or even the most elegant, rather it's the cards with texture. Cricut and other Cutting Machines just lack that  ability to create the"feel" of a higher quality card. Pros of the Empress I absolutely adore my Empress.
