Baby Cards: Sketch Challenges


Over on Anna Griffin, she recently released her Baby Icon Cut and Emboss Folders. Baby cards are often the hardest items for me to keep in stock. They're often my biggest sellers at trade shows, and as someone in their 30s, I know so many people having little ones. So I went to work. I really didn't know where to begin my day, so I started with creating a whole slew of sentiments.

I often struggle with what a baby card should say, but Best Wishes kind of covers all the bases. But that didn't really help with inspiration. I went looking for Sketch Challenges. The first challenge comes courtesy of Sketch Saturday: 

And here was my result:

Using an assortment of pattern papers, I was really happy with the result. I ended up using the horsey cut so that the little mustache could peek through.

Over on Try Stampin' on Tuesday, they're up to their milestone 500th sketch. Here was the sketch:


And here was my creation based on that:

I was thrilled with this result. It feels both festive and fun. The patterned paper (c/o of Lawn Fawn) really added a nice dimension.

Finally, on Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge, they offered this sketch: 

When I saw this challenge, I wanted to pull out my new Gothic Window dies, but I already committed to baby cards today. Changing the window felt big and sort of felt like I was tainting the integrity of the sketch, so I wanted to make sure I kept the flowers to nod to the original Sketch.

Where the other patterned papers popped, this one didn't quite work. I kind of wish I textured the background yellow. Nevertheless, the neutrality of the card plays into why I think it still works.

So that was the start of my day today, I'm sure this won't be the last time I play with these baby emboss folders.

For the past few months, I've really given my Anna Griffin Empress Machine a workout. For those not in the know, The Empress is a high powered non-crank emboss and die cutting machine. Anna Griffin's Slimline Compendium Dies Review

Anna Griffin's new Slimline Compendium dies feel essential. In the past few months, several companies as well as crafters showcased Slimline cards. These much taller (and much slimmer) cards measuring an astounding 8" x 9" and fit into business sized envelopes. They looked attractive, and while no doubt, anyone could cut the base with a bone folder and a paper cutter, the dimensions feel so unwieldy, it does feel intimidating.  Enter Anna Griffin's Slimline Compendium Dies. Now everyone knows that I'm one of Anna Griffin's biggest fans. The Empress is to me, bar none, the best die cutter out there. Review: Sizzix's Stamper's Secret Weapon

In my quest to get better stamped images, I stumble across Sizzix's Stamper's Secret Weapon. This is an item that many people say they can't live without. Me - I'm not so sure. I generally don't have issues with stamping, and learning to use the Stamper's Secret Weapon is a trick all its own. So what is it? Available on Amazon  for around $12.99, the actual product is a foam mat that measures 12in x 10.5in x  0.5in. The mat feels both firm, but squishes down nicely. Does it work? Without a doubt. Once you learn that you don't need to apply the same pressure you applied before. I was working on a card for Mother's Day. The actual big image looked great: The image came out rather striking. When it came to text, my end result was a bit different: Notice how the A in the upper left is totally smeared. Now I could have had too much ink, but that's never been an issue before.
