Freshly Made Sketches #463 Entry: Truck and Penguin Cards

My absence on my blog means that the holidays are feeling busier than usual. The work, life balance is a bit tough. And as I finally make my way through some video games, I've had a little bit less free time to make cards. Additionally, the few cards that I have made, I haven't had a chance to upload pictures just yet. That said, I sat down this evening to make a few cards that I'm pretty happy with. This card comes courtesy of Freshly Made Sketches which gave the following layout.

This was actually the perfect little challenge for this evening because it allowed me to pull out my scrap box with some leftover holiday strips. I quickly got to work using my brand new recollection stamps.. The first card I made feels like the "manliest" Christmas card I could muster.

Does anything say manly like plaid, a truck and the phrase "Trucking Through the Snow"?

For my second iterations of these cards, I used my brand new Recollections penguin set.

And as a slight variation, I used mistletoe strips to off set the penguins:

The various coloring of the penguins, the hats and the mistletoe comes courtesy of my Copic markers.

And voila, some brand new cards. I love this challenge set, and I would love to do it again with a couple different variations using actual leaves or even washi tape. This is definitely a sketch I will save for a long time to come.

Check back later this week as I used the truck stamp set for another challenge. Once I take the pictures, I'll be uploading and posting the new post. (Update! Post here!)

Anna Griffin Empress Machine Review

For the past few months, I've really given my Anna Griffin Empress Machine a workout. For those not in the know, The Empress is a high powered non-crank emboss and die cutting machine. It's akin to devices such as the Cuttlebug, The Big Shot, or the Gemini. I Have a Cricut / Cameo / Silhouette - Why This? The short answer is, you can create texture in your cards. While the aforementioned devices are no doubt powerful and create designs that the Empress can only dream about, there's no doubt that emboss machines give textures and creates intricacy that cutting machines cannot compete with. My most complimented cards are not the ones with the most layers or even the most elegant, rather it's the cards with texture. Cricut and other Cutting Machines just lack that  ability to create the"feel" of a higher quality card. Pros of the Empress I absolutely adore my Empress. For those with arthritis or other mobility issues, a device like the Empress is a ...

Black and White Z Card

Over on the Just Us Girls challenge blog , the task this week was quite monochromatic. Let's take a look at the challenge: I can't say that I've ever worked with just black and white for a card. While no doubt I probably inadvertently made a card with this scheme, I can't say I've gone out of my way to enhance only black and white (I know I've definitely grey scaled before).  It was my dear friend Melinda's birthday. For her birthday I made her and her husband Mah Jongg t-shirts using HTV. I was thrilled with the results: Melinda is the kind of person who loves handmade cards, so I went into this challenge with her in mind. I also have recently fallen in love with Z fold cards (see my vintage masculine Z-Card here ). I pulled out my Sizzix Circle Thinlits and my Recollections Black and White Paper and got to work. Here are the results: So the interesting thing with a Z-fold card is how it unfolds in so many dimensions. Here is the front and back layer. Her...
